I'll be putting together a full, way-too-long post of my trials and travails in the process along with input from my partner-in-crime Duurtlang, but for now I'm satisfied with this. Best service I've ever gotten at a county tax office.

So the long wait was worth it! Any pictures of the car with the plates?

It was indeed! Honestly, though, it just wasn't nearly the pain in the ass I was expecting, but it didn't hurt that I was the first person in the door when they opened and had three people helping me. Kind of kicking myself for having dragged my feet for the past few weeks. I was expecting this to be a several hour ordeal, so I was trying to find time where I could burn an entire morning; now I'm here in the office two hours earlier than I expected to be!
Came straight into the office after getting it done so no pictures with the plates yet. I'm hoping I'll be able to mount a US-style plate to the long-plate mount; we'll find out when I go home for lunch, and if I can't then I'll run by the BMW dealer (which is literally right around the corner from my apartment) and see if they don't have an E30 US-plate mount on hand.
P.S. wound up having to pay tax on $7000 instead of $5000 because the bill of sale had the 7 on it originally and was kind of modified to say 5 and they wouldn't accept $5000 as the taxable value with that. Was an extra $125, but I was just ready to get it over and done with so I said fuck it and paid the difference. At least they made it a little bit difficult on me!

Have a funny story about that from Cars and Coffee last weekend that I'll include in my longer write up, ha.

Can I interpret this as you being able do all of this within a very short period of time the next time I send you an E30 Touring? Great! I'll stockpile a few extra right now. Be right back, checking used car sites...
Seriously though, this seems like a great pilot study. A potential next one will be far smoother and efficient.

Haha! It should be a much smoother process next time. Biggest thing is that I now know how long each step takes, and I think I can knock out the most time consuming parts by just taking one full day off from work, which is totally worth it.
Still haven't found a good answer for shipping, yet, and I have decided that I probably need to form a company to put the cars into as opposed to my own name, and I'd like to find some indoor storage solution, but I've (we've) learned a lot through this first one and there's so much room for improvement.
Now to see if it's actually going to be profitable or not...!

When I lived in Dallas County, I always went to the tax office in the basement of the county building right downtown. I worked across the freeway from AA Center so it was an easy hike at lunch time. It was always really quick and easy.

That's the one. I grew up in the suburbs and was used to the clusterfuck that was the Irving/Lewisville/Carrollton locations, but I've used the Downtown location the past several times and it's been completely empty. It's one of the great revelations of my adult life.
